PLANNING
Planning a trip when you both want a different holiday
One of you wants to be in the sea by nine. The other wants a long breakfast and a dinner booked two weeks ahead. Here is how we plan around that.
Split the day, not the trip
Mornings and afternoons are the unit, not days. A day that works for two different people usually looks like one shared thing, one solo thing, and a meal you are both looking forward to. Someone swims, someone wanders, and you meet at two with something to talk about.
This sounds obvious and almost nobody does it. Most people plan a single joint schedule, then feel guilty when one of them is bored.
Name one non negotiable each
Before you plan anything, both of you write down the single thing that would make the trip feel wasted if you missed it. One each, not five. Those two go into the plan first, on the days that suit them, and everything else is built around them.
Agree the pace out loud
Pace causes more arguments than any individual activity. Pick a number each: two things a day, four, six. Plan to the lower number and keep the extras in a list at the bottom of the day. The faster one can add, the slower one never feels dragged.
Put the slow days after the travel days. Nobody is at their best after a 5am flight.
Book what runs out, leave the rest loose
If the person who likes structure books everything, the other feels trapped. If the spontaneous one plans nothing, the first spends the trip anxious. The middle is simple: book the famous sight, two dinners, the boat and the train, then keep a shortlist with addresses and opening hours for everything else.
Put money in the plan
The other quiet argument is money. Decide in advance which two or three things are worth spending on, and where you are happy to be cheap. A ninety euro dinner you agreed on in advance feels completely different to one that arrives as a surprise.
Write down who wanted what
When we plan for couples, each day says which of you asked for which thing. It changes the mood. The morning hike is not "your hike", it is a thing you both agreed was in the plan, and when someone is tired and skips it, nobody is keeping score, because the score is already written down and balanced.
